Clara Morera

Clara Morera studied at the National School of Visual Arts in Havana and graduated from San Alejandro Academy of Arts. She was a member of the famed Grupo Antillano - a group of artists that articulated a vision of Cuban culture that privileged the importance of Africa and Afro-Caribbean influences in the formation of the Cuban nation-, which was active in Cuba in the 1970's and 80's. Morera currently lives and practices her art in New York City. Morera tends toward mixed media works and assemblages, which confirm her training in painting, tapestry, soft sculpture, drawing, and mixed media installations. Her oeuvre reveals the rich syncretism of Santería; she depicts virgins, angels, and Orishas. Addressing such themes as faith, magic, and myth, Morera’s work gives visual form to the intangible mystery of religion. Her works have been exhibited at such institutions as the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, the Cuban Cultural House in Prague, the Museum of the Americas, the Discovery Museum, The Rye Art Center, and the 8th Floor gallery in New York City. Her work forms part of many private and public collections including that of reknowned Cuban art collectors, Donald Rubin and Howard Farber.
