Amelia Peláez was born in 1896 in Las Villas, Cuba, now known as the Sancti Spíritus Province. In 1915, her family moved to Havana, to the La Víbora district, where she entered the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro" at age 20. She was one of Leopoldo Romañach's favorite students. By 1924, she exposed her paintings for the first time, along with a fellow Cuban female painter, María Pepa Lamarque. In 1927 she moved to Europe, and established herself in Paris, paying short visits to Spain, Italy and other nearby countries.
